Fried Pies

Remember those fast food apple pies you used to insist your mom get you for dessert, then got too full from your meal to ever try? In Oklahoma, that style of dessert turnover is a statewide delicacy, with everything from apple to chocolate to cherry stuffed inside a hot, flaky crust. They trace their roots to the town of Springer near the Arbuckle Mountains, where a little service station off I-35 began selling them in its restaurant. Since then, Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies have spread to Texas and Kansas, a perfect road trip snack while traversing the plains.
