Poke bowls have spread so far you can literally find them in North Dakota now. For something uniquely Hawaiian, try this take on sushi, which traces its roots to World War II. During that era, soldiers stationed in the islands were looking for new and creative ways to eat their rations and started combining them with rice balls called onigiri. And so, the musubi was born, a staple snack of many an island local and the state’s most distinctive contribution to American cuisine.
